Babies are Like Demons

Before you judge me further, what do I mean by that? (1)

Sometime demons will manifest their personalities through a person. Whenever such occurs due to the presence of God forcing them out into the open, it's because it's time for the demon to be aborted and for the person to be delivered. That's clear from whenever demons manifested when Jesus started his ministry full of the Holy Spirit. c.f. Mark 1:21-28. When I started getting more involved into what is now my current student ministry in the States, I had the fearful thought: what if demons manifest themselves in this church because the way we do things invites evil powers to manifest themselves and increase in influence? It turned out, however, that such a fear didn't really line up with the word of God. For if that were the case, then Jesus and the early church attracted evil spirits to come show up by the way they did things.

To the contrary, the evil spirits came “out of the closet” and manifested through people because it was time for them to leave. They were being evicted from their home and didn't want to leave without a fight or a hissy fit. That’s why we (the church both then and now) cast out the demons by the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing liberty to those held in bondage to them, and showing people what the kingdom of God is like. c.f. Luke 4:18; 11:20; 1 Corinthians 4:20; 2 Corinthians 3:17f.

In both cases, the kingdom of Satan decreases in influence as Jesus uses his body--which is now the church--to kick the devil's butt, until all his enemies should be made a footstool under his feet. c.f. 1 Corinthians 15:24-26. God the Father glorifies His name by the mighty works He does, for He likes to show His superiority over every false god (idols and demons) and his great love for people by setting them free indeed. That’s why Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, saying that whoever believes in him will do those same works that he did. c.f. Acts 10:38; John 14:7-14.

The other day I re-watched a great talk by Dan Mohler (2). As a point of clarification to his extremely helpful message, whether the demon is talking to the believer from the inside or from the outside, the believer’s response to the devil's voice ought to be the same--communion with Holy Spirit and saying the opposite of whatever the devil says. One Sunday when driving back from church with my church family in Minnesota, demons were manifesting through a friend in the car. In that situation, whatever the demon said, we said the opposite, saying what the word of God said.

So whether the devil is speaking to you from the inside or the outside, the demon's location doesn't seem to change the reality of how Jesus’ followers treat them. Just as a baby’s nature doesn't really change whether it is inside or outside the womb any more than going outside during a full moon makes me into a werewolf (3), whether a demon is inside or outside someone’s body shouldn't change the believer's approach in each case. In either situation, one should still resist the devil by submitting to God, communing with the Holy Spirit (through adoring Him and thanking Him for the truth of His word), and saying the opposite of whatever lie the devil utters because of the truth, “It is written…” c.f. Matthew 4; James 4:7.

Another reason the approach of submitting to God doesn't change whether the demonic voice is inside or outside the person is that after a demon leaves a person, it will revisit that person, for it misses its old home. c.f. Matthew 12:43-45. Thus the person will have to battle it again with the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God), communing with the Holy Spirit by meditating on the truth of the word of God day and night. Romans 12:2 calls that being transformed by the renewing of your mind.

  1. Years ago I heard in a Mark Driscoll sermon online that demons are cute, for they make themselves appear cute or desirable in order to befriend and deceive their hosts. People take the bait and let demons steal, kill, and destroy in their lives by unwittingly fellowshipping with demons through sexual immorality, drugs, or anything through which the demons in the people derive pleasure or satisfaction, to the long-term detriment of their hosts. That both demons and babies are “cute” is beside the main point, although that could be another similarly.

  3. That's because I don't become a werewolf during a full moon. That is, in fact, demonic. More common in the “fear-power cultures” of the Global South, such shape-shifting may occur, as in reported cases of Navajo medicine men or African witch doctors. If you are a believer in Jesus who happens to ever come across such a beastly demonic manifestation, then the principle of dealing with it remains the same. Commune with the Holy Spirit, thanking Him that He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. c.f. 1 John 4:4. Be filled with the Holy Spirit moment by moment, receiving power from him to declare God's glorious deeds. c.f. Eph. 5:18-21; Acts 1:8; Psalm 118. And do that everyday, moment by moment, not just when you are minding your own business and happen to come across a werewolf.
